Please see below from Simon Tagg, leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, stating that the council will be escalating their complaint about the EA's handling of Walley's Quarry to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.
“As a result of this totally inadequate response, and the abject failure of the Environment Agency to bring about any real improvements in over a year of supposedly ‘intense’ regulation of the Walley's Quarry landfill site, it is my intention to escalate this matter to the next level possible, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman."
“This will be done through the Member of Parliament for Newcastle, Aaron Bell, and I will be speaking to him as soon as I can to move this forward.”
I am of course happy to support this escalation, and will continue to work with Simon and the council to maintain pressure on both the EA and the operator to resolve this issue and hold those responsible to account.
The investigation into alleged criminal activity remains ongoing.
