Earlier this week I met with Newcastle Community Transport (NCT). Left to right in the picture are Rob (the Co-ordinator), Phil (Vice-Chair), myself and George (one of the volunteer drivers).
NCT have been providing a door-to-door transport service in Newcastle and the surrounding area for over forty years. They are helping people, especially the elderly and disabled, to get to a variety of social events and appointments.
Every year NCT provide around 15,000 passenger-trips. The charity has two easily-accessible minibuses which can accommodate up to 12 people, or eight plus a wheelchair. The minibuses have parking spaces at the M Club Spa and Fitness Centre.
Rob, the Co-ordinator, told me: “Journeys can be for anything from a short shopping trip to a group holiday as far afield as places like Blackpool.
“Bookings need to be made 7 days in advance by ringing 01782 627770, between 9am and 1pm.
“We help many people who struggle to use public transport and otherwise wouldn’t be able to leave their homes.”
All their drivers are volunteers and they are always looking for more people to help out with this. Please share this post with (or tag in the comments) anyone you think might be interested. They would also like to hear from people who could help in non-driving roles.
Businesses or groups who could offer financial support are also invited to get in touch. The charity has benefitted from generous grants in the past to help with their running costs.
Phil, the Vice Chair, said: “We are grateful for all the support we have received, including M-Club allowing us to park our vehicles at their site.”
If you would like to volunteer for NCT then please get in contact with them at 01782 627770 or info@newcastlecommunitytransport.org.uk.
