The first case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been confirmed in Staffordshire.
A resident of Newcastle-under-Lyme was identified as a close contact of an out-of-area visitor who had tested positive on returning to the UK from overseas.
Robust contact tracing means that they were able to self-isolate at an early stage. Their small number of contacts were also able to self-isolate and, as there is no evidence of community transmission, no additional testing is necessary at this stage.
At this stage, it is important that everyone remains vigilant and takes sensible precautions, but there is no need to panic.
Please do get a PCR test if you have any symptoms, however mild, and continue to wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.
The vaccine remains the best way to remain protected against the virus, so please do take up the offer of a booster jab as soon as it is available to you.
