The UK are leading the rest of Europe on the total vaccination rollout. Our vaccination programme is a national success story, and the reason it matters is that it allows us to replace the protection currently given by restrictions on our freedoms with the protection from science.
The data confirms that our strategy is working because the vaccines work. Firstly the number of hospital admissions is now falling faster than the number of new cases, whereas in the first peak it fell more slowly. Secondly the fall in hospitalisations is faster among the age groups vaccinated first than in younger age groups yet to get a jab.
I was pleased that our European neighbours, such as France, have now recognised that the Oxford vaccine is in fact very effective, and they are now beginning to undo the damage they did (to themselves!) by the politically-motivated statements they initially made about it.
