Yesterday Labour held an Opposition Day Debate on the Government's management of the economy over the past decade. This turned out to be another chance to remind the Labour Party exactly why it is in opposition.
When Gordon Brown left government in 2010, the Treasury left a note for the coalition government saying ‘I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards, and good luck!’ The Conservative Party had to clean up the mess Labour left behind.
This is why the British people do not trust them on the economy. And with respect to our management of the economy, the British people have had their say three times; in 2015, 2017 and 2019. When I was campaigning on the doorstep in 2019 it was clear that the people of Newcastle-under-Lyme saw through Jeremy Corbyn's ludicrous manifesto.
It is true that the various Governments have had to make difficult decisions over the past decade. But by reducing the colossal deficit we inherited, whilst growing employment and reducing inequality, this then gave the Chancellor the room he needed when Covid struck, to make the dramatic manoeuvres he made to support the economy through our £280 billion support package.
