PRIME MINISTER'S RESIGNATION

This afternoon, Liz Truss announced that she would resign her position as Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister. 

She stated that she had spoken to the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady and that a leadership election will be completed by Friday next week.

ECONOMIC UPDATE

A central responsibility for any Government is to do what is necessary for economic stability. This is vital for businesses making long term investment decisions, families concerned about their bills, their mortgages, and the cost of living, and protecting the most vulnerable in society.

NEW ROLE AS PARLIAMENTARY PRIVATE SECRETARY

I am delighted to announce that I have joined the Government and been appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the ministerial team at the Ministry of Justice, under the Lord Chancellor Brandon Lewis MP.

SWEARING IN

Today I had the honour of swearing the oath of allegiance to King Charles III.

Members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords are required to swear in before they can take their seats at the start of a new Parliament after a general election. I first did this in December 2019.

Back down again to Westminster to swear allegiance to the King, ahead of the Chancellor’s statement on Friday.

TRIBUTE TO HER LATE MAJESTY THE QUEEN

It was a sad privilege to speak today on behalf of constituents in Newcastle-under-Lyme to offer my condolences, and theirs, to His Majesty and to the whole Royal Family, and to give thanks for the life and service of Her Majesty.

CHAIRING THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

Yesterday I had the honour of chairing the Science and Technology Committee, as an interim co-chair. Our former chair, Greg Clark MP, has returned to Cabinet and so cannot also be a Select Committee chair.
