Today at Health Questions I raised the issue of Walley's Quarry landfill once again in the House of Commons. I know that from speaking to Dr Scott at Silverdale and Ryecroft Practice last month, as well as those writing directly to me, that many residents are concerned for their health, both physically and mentally. The gases and odour coming from the landfill are a major environmental catastrophe which raises understandable worries about public health. The one piece of data that we have seen so far from the Environment Agency's monitoring confirms that the WHO's 24-hour guidelines were breached.
The fuller report from Public Health England on the EA's March monitoring data should be out soon.
I am pleased that the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has agreed to meet with me on the matter. He also encouraged all the relevant authorities to tackle the problem, and I will be meeting with the Environment Agency once again later this week.
