As we build back better from the pandemic, we are transforming our high streets into the kind of places that people want to call home for generations to come. We have a vision for cleaner and more vibrant high streets where entrepreneurs can thrive and local businesses are supported, with permanent al fresco dining and where derelict eyesores are transformed into quality homes.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is benefiting from more than £34 million of investment through our town deal and the future high streets fund. We will see major development of the town centre including demolition of the old civic offices in Merrial Street and building both residential and commercial premises on the Ryecroft site.
I was glad the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, agreed with me that Newcastle Borough Council, under the leadership of Simon Tagg, has a great plan for the town centre backed by this investment.
