The UK had already supplied Ukraine with military support before Putin illegally invaded their country. For a number of years our military has trained the Ukrainian army through Operation ORBITAL. In the weeks before the invasion, we also provided 2000 anti-armour missiles, and the training to use them, which the Ukrainians are now putting to effective use. We have sent further military support (lethal aid in the form of defensive weapons, and non-lethal aid such as body armour and helmets) to Ukraine since the invasion.
This British military support - we were the first to offer it - has been greatly appreciated by both the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian people.
The Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace MP, further announced today that the UK will also supply the Ukrainian Government with 3615 New Light Anti-tank Weapons and anti-tank javelin missiles.
It is also vital that Ukraine retains its ability to fly, which is why the UK are also supplying Starstreak high velocity anti-aircraft missiles, again together with the required training. This will allow the Ukrainian forces to better defend their skies.
Furthermore, the UK is increasing our direct humanitarian aid to Ukraine, making us the largest bilateral donor in the world.
President Zelenskyy's speech in the House of Commons yesterday moved everyone in the Chamber, and I am sure it moved many across the UK. His people are fighting for their very survival.
