Prior to recess I had the opportunity to raise the latest situation in Hong Kong at Foreign Office Questions.
In 2020 China introduced the National Security Law in Hong Kong in response to massive following months of anti-extradition, pro-democracy protests that had swept through the city the previous year.
The Law reduces Hong Kong's judicial autonomy and makes it easier to punish demonstrators and activists.
The Foreign Secretary told me that the National Security Law is not being used for its original purpose and that it is curtailing freedoms of the people of Hong Kong, which undermines the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which is the treaty we signed with China prior to handing Hong Kong back in 1997.
